But whatever the view, poverty has come to stay and its trends keep rising at alarming levels. Poverty or impoverishment has different faces! Surely it does not mean a lack of money. Despite the fact that many people have the wrong notion that poverty means a dearth for money, true poverty encapsulates a lot of other issues. True poverty is widespread across thousands of countries across the world; in fact, we can call it a social scourge on society that is impossible to measure nor define. True poverty includes lack of health and amenities to take care of health. It also means not only a lack of food but also a lack of proper education and skills. Besides a lack of shelter, true poverty also means a lack of one’s freedom and a powerlessness to raise our voices against justice because of a lack of representation. Especially now during the period of recession we are facing, and even much after that, the Census Bureau is not in a position to predict the existing level of poverty in the country and in addition to this, since regional disparities persist, it is no wonder that poverty is progressing at a steady pace. But giving an approximation, the Census Bureau stated that “ the nation’s official poverty rate in 2007 was 12. 5 percent, not statistically different from 2006. Globalization is the latest trend of the day – but it is unfortunate that poverty can be viewed at a Global level – the rich are becoming richer and the poor are becoming poorer. The gap between the haves and have-nots has widened drastically. Well, what are we doing about it? The Government’s noble goal is to try and halve the proportion of people living in extreme poverty between 1990 and 2015, (U. N, Millennium Development Goal) through their first ‘ Millennium Development Goal.’ Research studies are being carried out to understand the depth and nature of poverty that exists among the different nations. The society at large has become aware of this fact and is trying to find ways and means to reduce the number of people on or below the poverty line. So taking into consideration the sincere efforts being made in this direction, we can hope to see a much better future!
