Lincoln’s proclamation, expressing both his gratitude for God’s blessings and his hope that the terrible war would come to a speedy end, entreated Americans not to forget that prosperity and freedom were God’s gift. Ever since 1863, Thanksgiving Day has been observed annually. It has become one of the best loved and most widely celebrated holidays in the USA. The Thanksgiving Day spirit dictates that hospitality should be extended to persons who are alone or away from home.
