In which one mistake can be a matter of life and death. Professional Knowledge and Abilities 3The Texas Board of Nursing is an organization that consists of mainly professionals in the nursing industry, with one or two members of the community known as a consumer member.

??? Our mission is to protect and promote the welfare of the people of Texas by ensuring that each person holding a license as a nurse in the State of Texas is competent to practice safely??? (Texas Board of Nursing, mission statement). By regulating the practice of nursing and approving nursing education programs the Board can meet their mission. ??? Acting in accordance with the highest standard of ethics, accountability, efficiency, effectiveness and openness, the Texas Boards of Nurses approaches its mission with a deep sense of purpose and responsibility and affirms that the regulation of nursing is a public and private trust??? (Texas Board of Nursing Agency Philosophy). The responsibilities of the board include; licensing services, accreditation services, enforcement services, and information services.

Licensing services include approving new nurses and renewing licenses, and accreditation services, includes regulating nursing schools. The Board is also responsible for enforcing nursing regulations and information services provide information to the medical community on the latest updates to the Nursing Practice Act. By regulating the practice of nursing the board can protect the community from not only incompetent nurses, but also ineffective nursing schools. The Board of Nursing defines the scope of practice and sets the standards for nursing in the State of Texas.

Newsletters are sent out monthly newsletters with updates and changes in standards of practice. By not following the standards set by the board, nurses not only put their patients at risk, but also jeopardize their nursing careers. A nurse who does not comply with the nursing standards put forth by the board will risk suspension of his or her license or even termination. A diligent nurse who complies with The Nurse Practice Act will be an asset to his or her employer and an advocate for the patient. Upon graduating from an accredited nursing school all nurses receive a copy of The Nurse Practice Act.

The Act states the scope of nursing practice and the professional values and ethics expected of all nurses licensed in the State of Texas. By adhering to not the scope of practice and professional values and ethics, a nurse will advance in his or her career without difficulties. Acquiring professional knowledge and abilities is critical in all aspects of professions. However, in the nursing field not only is it critical to have this knowledge and ability as one mistake can be deadly. When a nurse graduates from nursing school the Florence Nightingale Oath is taken by the nurse. This oath was modeled after the Hippocratic Oath composed in 1893 by Mrs. Lystra E. Gretter and a Committee for the Farrand Training School for Nurses in Detroit, Michigan.

To summarize the oath, it states the commitment to maintain and elevate the standard of the nursing profession. Professional Values and Ethics 4References(2000). Texas Board of Nursing. Retrieved from http://www. bne.
