Leaders shape our nation, communities, and organizations. They are visionaries who help guide people and make decisions that keep our world in motion. It does not matter if one is a leader of the whole country or a small group of people he should be a positive example for others. Leaders are passionate individuals who guide and inspire others, make hard decisions and take responsibilities of a difficult situation to make our make our world a better place.
I have four years of professional experience R&D engineering and business development at Kappa Manufacturing. However my experience with acknowledged leadership came while working as engineering project management at cost reducing projects at Abbott Vascular. I have worked there for six years. During that time, I have realized that the key point for any leader while working with people is personal approach and compassion.
Parts of my responsibility was providing direction and guidance to junior team members and training technicians. I realized that people do not like to be taught especially if their teacher is younger than they are. My first group of technicians gave me a hard time. During my theoretical training, they tried to make fun and made jokes about me behind my back. I can recall that that was a negative experience; however, I understood that in order to overcome this I need to gain respect form staff. I have tried not only to teach my colleagues but motivate them to work. During practical training, I was doing my best to help each one. Policy of complementing even small successes and finding personal approach was a brake thou in gaining respect from trainees. A great deal of time was spent to persuade them that I am concerned with each person’s weaknesses. Even though I still had to point their mistakes, I always tried to concentrate on how it should be done right not what was wrong. After sometimes, I have noticed that my trainees became more trustful and began to complete their job to the best of their abilities. This experience taught me that compassion from a leader will lead to trust from their followers.
Alexander Hamilton once said that “ Those who stand for nothing, fall for anything”(1978). To my mind, leaders need first of all set up his goals in order to make sure that he knows what he is standing for. To my mind I embody this quality. Once I have realized whom I want to become, all my further actions were directed to compass my purpose.
Even though I already have some professional experiences, I still have a lot to learn. I need this program in order to become a better leader, more concentrated and disciplined, to develop my managing and communication skills. Most importantly to learn how to determine relevant decision criteria and alternatives, in order to achieve success for the company that I work for. My solid academic background, my professional experience and theoretical knowledge will allow me to succeed in this amazing program that I am so passionate about.
