India is a very important ally for the United States and should be aggressively courted. In the past, India and the U. S. have not had great relations, but that is improving as India becomes a powerful, democratic player on the world stage. The recent deal to exempt India from some of the provisions of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty is a strong bedrock upon which to build relations. As the world’s most populous democracy, India holds the key to peace in the region. More economic partnerships with India should also be strongly promoted.
Pakistan is also an important ally, but an increasingly difficult one. It too is a nuclear power and a democracy but it has many problems with jihadist terrorists and members of the Taliban who hide in its frontier regions.
