Women’s roles became more valued for their aid in the revolution and were under the idea of “ Republican motherhood” or mothers for the new nation. They began to have ideas of the revolution stimulate hopes and expectations for equality and freedom. In some cases they even gained voting rights, however overall the revolution only lead to a limited gain of status. The same could be said of the slaves. Although the slave trade itself was banned and in the northern states, slavery was abolished, it did not completely remove slavery and make them considered as a “ real person.
Nonetheless, the ideals of the revolution inspired women and slaves for equality, freedom and independence that would contribute in the future. I would say that their hopes were fulfilled. In the rough draft of the Declaration of Independence they had no rights whatsoever. They only looked at men who had money as equal people. The main idea of the Declaration of Independence was that all men are equal, and deserve to live a life of freedom and happiness, without oppression; and in the event of oppression, then the government needs to be removed and replaced with a better one.
The main ideas were summed up by Thomas Jefferson: Whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their safety and happiness.
