Aristotle defined logic as an instrument that gives us means of knowing anything. He believed that logic is the first step in learning because it is a tool that triggered all kinds of knowledge. It helps one to know when judgment needs proof as well as prove the validity of that proof. He suggested some formal rules for right reasoning which were embraced by other philosophers.
The foundation for Aristotle’s work in logic was provided by two works; on interpretation and categories. Categories form boundaries for terms and possible distinctions. His very important work in logic, the syllogism, contains some assumptions from which we can deduce conclusions. Aristotle also tried to prove that his logical theory can be applied to scientific knowledge. He said that a science is based on self-evident truths which one can use to come up with hypothesis.
However, there have been changes to this form of thinking because syllogism contributes to a very small part of modern studies. People adopted mathematical logic and discarded syllogism. Currently we have both mathematical reasoning and using logic to explain logical issues. Mathematicians depend on logic for proofs hence the close link between the two. Since the time of Aristotle logic has not changed much, although today we have modern formal logic. There is no difference between modern formal logic and logic discussed by Aristotle. It can be explained as the same logic which has undergone developments and done away with concepts which have been proved irrelevant.
I can define logic as system of thinking that scrutinizes both our correct and incorrect reasoning. It involves both studying and using valid reasoning. Logic is aimed at elaborate a coherent system hence allowing us to investigate and assess bad and good reasoning forms.
