Throughout this course, I have been exposed to very essential writing skills that have made a positive impact in my personal life and also other courses that I have been tackling in this semester. Coming to think of it, my communication skills have benefited as well as analytical skills especially where it involves reviewing academic sources. In the discussion below, the intention will be to categorically reflect and review the role of learning visual rhetoric, evaluative arguments and identification and analysis of academic sources.
Visual Rhetoric
In my own perspective, visual perspective has been a form of communication using images in the construction of an argument. In simpler terms it is actually a tool and strategy that contributes to the success of a persuasion. Visual rhetoric has been about how images can work on their own while they can also supplement written in creation of an argument that has been designed to influence a specific audience. In my life, I have found myself being influenced by images and art in making decisions. For instance in advertisements especially on the internet, once an image captures my attention, I develop the curiosity to dig dipper on what it is about.
Identification, Evaluation and Incorporation of Sources
When it comes to sources, it is a systematic process of review. The key things to note is to identify the right places to get the sources, their credibility and their appropriateness to the topic under study. Sources actually are very educative and informative. They form a strong evidence on any academic essay as well. While they are very important, there are challenges that I have identified with various kinds and types of sources. To begin with, there is a lot of information that can present sources. While there is a lot, there are some sources in the internet that have are baseless and misleading. It requires critical analysis to detect which offers credible information. Another challenge that has come across though I have learnt it over time is the different methods upon which the sources should be cited, referenced and a bibliography made.
Classical Argumentation
Writing a classical argument has been a new experience. Though I had participated in arguments before, writing down a classical argument essay appeared to require analytical skills. From the beginning, the course identified that in a classical argument, the primary intention is to persuade. In the persuasion, it offers a format that takes five parts which are the introduction, the narration, a confirmation, a refutation and lastly the conclusion. In some cases, as a matter of fact, in most cases references or sources are necessary.
In this tasks, the challenging part was writing the confirmation and refutation of the argument while still maintaining the theme of the argument and avoiding to confuse the reader or the audience on the side of the argument that I lean towards. To expound further, the confirmation will require that supporting evidence is provided and the claim is elaborated further. This part thus requires that the evidence should be very strong to convince the audience. It does not end there however as the refutation part kicks in. this part is a risky but a mandatory step. I state this because, one has to present the opposing claims, anticipate the possible objections that may be developed. This is then followed by appropriate and possible responses that should respond to the claims.
Impact of this Course on other Courses
The academic benefits that I have developed in writing arguments and proper use of sources has extended to the broader academic sector. This is because, after learning this course, I am now in a position to offer appropriate and credible justification to any assignment and I can indicate the sources appropriately as well as decent organization of my work.
Impact of the Course in Personal Life
Upon reflection, I can identify positive changes that have occurred in my personal life. In this accord, I am able to approach real life arguments and debates with discipline. Discipline in such that I expect to lose the argument if I don’t arm myself with adequate evidence. I am also prepared to listen to the party’s argument and address their claims appropriately. Through multiple writings, my understanding on English concepts has improved and I can now identify new vocabularies in my communication especially after going through multiple sources. In addition, I have developed an understanding of how the human brain may be convinced through attractive and impressive art which can be an added advantage when dealing with prospects such as advertisements.
In summary, from a personal opinion, it would be appropriate for every student regardless of the courses they study to be given a chance to be in a class on this course. This is because, though the course may be demanding, it will equip each student with analytical skills and proceed to positively impact on their work environment or personal life as it has done for me.
