The story of Wuthering Heights written by Emily Bronte takes place in theVictorian time period in the Northern Yorkshire moors, in England. The story’smain settings are two homes on the moors, Wuthering Heights and ThrushcrossGrange.

All of the characters are related in some way and at one point oranother have done something to hurt someone else. The novel’s point of view isNelly’s voice, all through indirect contact. The novel is narrated by Lockwood; the events had been written down in his diary. Both characters complicate theirnarrations through misunderstandings about the story’s key events. Heathcliffwas an orphan who was brought to Wuthering Heights by Mr. Earnshaw and raisedwith his two children, Catherine and Hindley.

After the death of Mr. Earnshaw, Hindley begins to treat Heathcliff as his servant. Heathcliff and Catherinefall deeply in love but her desperate need to fit in society leads her to marryEdgar Linton, enraging Heathcliff. He decides that he is going to do anythingnecessary to get revenge on Catherine and her family because of the humiliationshe caused him.

He marries Isabella Linton, Edgar’s sister, but never returnsher feelings of admiration. He used her as a tool in his game of revenge. Hefinds fortune and uses his newfound financial power to purchase bothproperties, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. Wuthering Heights is a novel about good versus evil, the power ofan unbreakable love, and how society changes a person. The whole story is aboutHeathcliff’s seek for revenge on Catherine for marrying another man.

Hedestroys any relationship necessary in order to do so, as Catherine bringsutter despair to the men who love her. Catherine and Heathcliff’s everlastinglove is tested through her life with Edgar and their children and Heathcliff’sseek for revenge. She knows she loves him, but her need to be    acceptedoverpowered her feelings towards Heathcliff.

Catherine’s desire for social acceptanceis a common theme, showing how Victorian society was all or nothing. She lovedHeathcliff, but she knew that his social standing would not accept her intosociety. She instead settled for Edgar, who would meet her desires. Therelevance of the story of WutheringHeights
