Rapid increase in the number of vehicles is another reason for increasing automobile pollution within the KMA. As on 31 st March 2003, a total of 8, 41, 530 vehicles are registered with the Public Vehicles Department, Kolkata and a total of 5, 78, 114 vehicles in the other five KMA districts of 24 Parganas (South), 24 Parganas (North), Howrah, Hooghly and Nadia. The number of registered automobiles in KMA as on 31. 03. 2003 is tabulated below. During the last decade, automobile pollution has increased in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA).
Automobile exhausts emit particulate matter, unburnt hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and some carcinogenic organic compounds like benzene and polyaromatic hydrocarbons, having adverse health impact among the exposed population.
