There is more than 100 children die of child abuse every year.  Two children a week die from child abuse in Britain alone and many more deaths go unrecorded. If you hit your child and it leaves a mark that lasts over an hour it is considered child abuse. Child abuse can hurt how they grow up and can have a severe effect for them later on in life. Children have been abused by their parents practically since the beginning of time.

For centuries laws have failed to protect children from abuse. Children used to be considered property of their fathers, and women used to be property of their husbands until the late 1800’s. In the early 1870s, child abuse got attention with the news that an 8 year old orphan named Mary Ellen Wilson was receiving daily whippings and beatings at her foster home. Child abuse in the United States today is more common than many people want to believe or think. In the United States each year about 3 million reports of child abuse are made. That is almost 6 million children. Every day 4 or 5 children are killed due to child abuse. Let’s talk about one of the effects of child abuseTopic Sentence (Reason): This is one of the effects that Child abuse and neglect can have on a child.

Trevonta Randell Langford, 26, was charged with homicide for child abuse. On March 31, around 10: 28 p. m., Aiken County Sheriff’s deputies and emergency responders responded to  Samuels Street in North Augusta, South Carolina for an emergency involving a child.    When officers arrived, standing at the door was  Langford holding the lifeless unresponsive child. Aiken County EMS and first responders arrived at the home, and the child was taken to University Hospital for emergency care. Also on March 31, the child coughed up small amounts of mucus, which Langford said he had removed it with a syringe.

When the child had stopped breathing, Langford tried to do CPR  the best he could, but the child had no reaction. Investigators were notified on May 13 that the child had sadly passed away. Later during investigations, it was determined that the child had injuries from physical abuse. Investigators with the Aiken County Sheriff’s arrested Langford at around 6: 30 p.

m. on May 31.     He is held at the Aiken County detention center until his trial date is determined. Transition:          The numbers of deaths are increasing quickly.

A hospital says that in the first 11 months of 2017, child abuse-related deaths have more than doubled with people at the hospital then compared to 2016. Drug abuse is the leading factor for inclining of child abuse related deaths. The Department of Health and Human Services released a report that showed more than ? of kids in foster care are there because their caretakers have either abused drugs or are using drugs. They say it’s a parent’s right to discipline their child. Parents are generally free to discipline their children in any manner they choose, so long as the discipline is reasonable and causes no bodily injury. The question of how a parent disciplines a child such as through spanking or threat of spanking, however, is often the subject of many child abuse cases.

In certain circumstances, a parent, can raise the defense of “ parental privilege” and claim that they had the right to reasonably discipline a child under their authority. However, if a child’s injuries are more serious than minor bruising as a result of the discipline, the parental privilege may not apply. But it can have very harmful effects on their life and affect how their mentalities of the future. Some of the short-term effects of emotional abuse include: surprise and confusion, questioning of one’s own memory, “ did that really happen?” Anxiety or fear; hypervigilance, shame or guilt, aggression, becoming overly passive or compliantfrequent crying, avoidance of eye contact, feeling powerless and defeated as nothing you do ever seems to be right (learned helplessness), feeling like you’re “ walking on eggshells”, feeling manipulated, used and controlled. Effects of long-term emotional abuse include: depression, withdrawal, low self-esteem and self-worth, emotional instability, sleep disturbances, physical pain without cause, suicidal ideation, thoughts or attempts, extreme dependence on the abuser, underachievement, inability to trust, and substance abuse, also feeling trapped and alone. It can also cause Stockholm Syndrome.

It is very common in long-term abuse situations. In Stockholm Syndrome, the victim is so terrified of the abuser that the victim overly identifies and becomes bonded with the abuser in an attempt to stop the abuse. The victim will even defend their abuser and their emotionally abusive actions. Also these are some of the conditions that some children go through. Here is an example, Lewis forced his step-daughter to stand barefoot on tin cans and write what he called “ standards” on a piece of paper.

One of the sentences is: “‘ I will respect my father.” She had to write that 1, 000 times and this happened almost on a daily basis. At times she was only allowed to eat cat food, and there were other times when she wasn’t allowed to eat anything at all until her step-dad decided she was allowed to eat, Investigators say the girl was locked in a laundry room for long periods of time. Sometimes she was in the laundry room for so long that she urinated on herself. Lewis abused the girl “ by telling the child to stop stuttering” and then pushed his thumbs into her mouth of with force to cause the girls lips to have split corners on her mouth.

The force had caused scarring to both corners of her mouth. Prosecutors say the girl was forced to take baths in extremely hot or cold water along with either peroxide or lemon juice. In Conclusion, Child abuse can hurt how they grow up and can have a severe effect for them later on in life. With Trevonta Randell Langford, 26, child was dead.
