John F. Kennedy, Secretary of State Dulles, Harry S. Truman and a few others. But the two who he believed were the biggest heroes were Dwight D. Eisenhower and Winston Churchill. When I asked him why he said that it was because Of the inspirational speeches these men gave and their policy Of peace in a world where the atomic bomb existed and many world leaders were pressuring us to use them again. I liked learning about Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was born was born on October 14, 1890, in Dimension, Texas, to David Jacob Eisenhower and Ida Elizabeth Stoves Eisenhower. Dwight was the third of his parents’ seven sons.

When he was 6 years old he lost his 3 year old brother to diphtheria. That sucked for him. His family was poor. His father cleaned trains for a living. Read on Wisped that he had a brother who was a year younger than him named Edgar, and they were really close. After Dwight graduated from high school in 1909, he went to work to save money to pay for his brother’s college education. They made a deal that Dwight would work and pay for the first 2 years of Edger’s education and then the little brother would take a break from school and he would go to work and help support Dwight while he went to school.

Then they would switch again until they both had the education they wanted. What a good brother he was. After the first two years of helping his brother, in 191 1, he was appointed to the Naval Academy with all expenses paid, because he was a great football player and a great student in high school. He got married just after graduation from the academy to Miami Dodd and they had two sons. His oldest son tragically died at three years old of scarlet fever. Dwight D. Eisenhower worked his way up through the military and went to a four year command school and was eventually commissioned as a General in WI, where he gained much attention.

After returning home to his family, he took a civilian job as the president of a university in Texas, but that only lasted about 3 years. He returned to the military to help with the military action in Korea. After he came home again he was nominated as the Republican candidate for President and won by a landslide victory on November 20, 1952. By this time the cold war had been going on for only a few years even though my grandfather says he remembers that there was already a lot of worry and fear that the USSR as it was called would attack our country with nuclear weapons.

Our country had proven how effective it was t destroying whole cities. The whole world had been shown how terrible it could be to have a nuclear attack. It was known that the USSR, as Russia was known then, was developing or already had nuclear weapons so there was a lot of stress and worry on both sides. I think President Eisenhower was a Cold War hero because he was very focused on keeping nuclear was just a threat and not a reality. In his first inaugural address, he declared, “ Forces of good and evil are massed and armed and opposed as rarely before in history.

Freedom is pitted against slavery, lightness against dark. ” It was his idea to SE the threat of nuclear war to keep the USSR from spreading their communist ideas, but to use the knowledge of the atomic bomb for peace. A few months after his election, Eisenhower made his famous “ Atoms for Peace” speech at the united Nations General Assembly. The United States and Russia had both recently developed atomic bombs, and the speech helped to make people realize the possible benefits that atomic energy could give to nations responsible enough to use it.

He said that not all nuclear things were bad and could be used for peaceful things and not always for weapons. He was very aware of how dangerous things were between the USSR and the US. He didn’t want people to forget this so in his second Inaugural Address, Jan. 21, 1 957 he said, ‘ With both sides of this divided world in possession of unbelievably destructive weapons, mankind approaches a state where mutual annihilation becomes a possibility. No other fact of today’s world equals this in importance-?? it colors everything we say, plan, and do. He is also the President who signed the bill to fund NASA, which was really founded to help watch the other side of our “ divided world”. Anyway, I know that president Eisenhower did many more things as President n his sightseers, but those are the reasons that I think he was a Cold War Hero. The other Cold War Hero that my grandfather told me about was Winston Churchill. He was the Prime Minister of Great Britain for many years. My grandfather says that he remembers hearing an amazing speech on the radio while sitting with his parents in their living room.

He didn’t really remember the year, but he said that he was very affected by how Winston Churchill came over here to the IIS and basically said that we were all the same, the British and the Americans. We all spoke the same language, came from many f the same ancestors, and that we shared the same values. He was asking for all the help and offering to give all the help his country could give and get to Stop the spread of what he called the “ Iron Curtain”. My grandfather was sure that Winston Churchill made up that phrase. It was very effective.

My grandfather said he and his family were sitting together in that room and suddenly feeling like citizens of something larger than just the US. They were citizens of the world, and wanted and needed to protect it from harm. My grandfather was more moved by the speech he heard from Winston Churchill than he was any other time he can remember. By listening to my grandfather speak about it, I felt something too. It was kind of like being there. Winston Churchill was born on November 30, 1874 in Blenheim Palace. His parents were Lord Randolph Churchill and Jennie Jerome.

His father was a very wealthy and powerful man in Great Britain. His mother was an American named Jennie Jerome. Winston Churchill was well educated and went to Royal Military College. He worked his way up within the ranks of the British military and fought in many conflicts throughout his military career. He was elected to the office of Prime Minister, which is sort of like President of England, in 940. From what I learned about him on the internet, it seems like he was a very inspirational speaker. Right after he was elected, he gave a speech to some college students in 1 941 that think shows some of his personality.

It Was during WI and he was telling these young people about not giving up. He said, “ l am addressing myself to the School – surely from this period of ten months this is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never – in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense. ” He spent five years as Prime Minister ring WI and many people in the world believe he was the greatest military leader ever. Not sure about that. Then he was elected to the same office again in 1951 to 1955.
