English 99
English Department
Dear (Portfolio Reader):
Before English 99, my writing skills were below average. I did not enjoy writing before because I did not like to have to think of complicated or big words to write my essays or papers. However, having joined the English 99 class, I have gone through a decent growth in writing.
I am now fluent in communicating my idea, by selecting strong and positive word to explain my points. I have developed a good knowledge of the purposes of my writing and the audiences that it is meant for. This has helped me gain a professional approach in my writing.
In this portfolio for my English 99 work, I have included the three major assignments, two of which are, in my opinion, my best take-home essay and one recopied in-class essay.
My most memorable and intriguing of them all was the essay on “ The Concept of Love”. The subject is a universal human emotion that everyone perceives differently. The topic has no boundaries and incursion into the topic can be limitless. The essay was expressive, something that I have learned to appreciate since starting the English 99 class. The second essay on “ Sex Education in Public Schools” was particularly eye opening and highly educative. It brought out moral issues within our society and particularly within education institutions. The third essay, “ Prompt 1” was truly captivating. It tapped into my sense of imagination and survival techniques.
The English 99 class has involved, in my opinion, five key dimensions of learning, namely, use of prior and emerging experience, skills and strategies, confidence and independence, knowledge and understanding, and reflectiveness. I am gradually learning how to become self-reliant in my work. I have used the instructors to obtain more ideas and better understanding of the requirements of assignments, but doing most of the utilizing my own ideas. This portfolio exhibits my accomplishments as a student so far in English 99.
Sincerely,
