Annotated Bibliography Carson, Rachel. Silent Spring Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2002: 23-43. Print. The book offers a look at widespread ecological degradation and touched off an environmental awareness that still exists. Rachel Carson focused on insecticides’ poison, weed killers; use of sprays in farming etc. which have led to dangerous chemicals in foods. Carson argues that those chemicals are more dangerous than radiation and that for the first time in history, humans were exposed to chemicals that stayed in their systems from birth to death. Presented with thorough documentation, the book opened more than a few eyes about the dangers of the modern world and stands today as a landmark work.

Albers’ narrative book explores how Vermont has stood as the national ideal naturally maintained rural community. She shows how European settlers, convinced that their claim to the land was “ a God-given right”, shaped the landscape to meet economic needs and to satisfy philosophical beliefs. The result is a conflict between practical requirements and romantic ideals that has persisted to the present day.

Kim Heacox explores the development of America’s consciousness to the environment. He presents the notable feats accomplished by dedicated people such as Lewis, Clark, Henry David Thoreau, John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt. He uses original sources dating back the 1600s; he pieces together an inspirational story with fascinating characters such as Thomas Moran, John Wesley Powell, the Civil War officer who first mapped the Grand Canyon.
